Industrial'd out with corrugated steel panels and exposed brick walls, this tiny, mostly outdoor spot is billed as the "Working Man's Gourmet Burger", with make-your-own options including three 8oz patties (beef, turkey, veggie), homemade mayo-based spreads (onion, cranberry, chipotle), extras (applewood smoked bacon, fried egg, sauteed onion, etc), and bun style: whole wheat honey, "old fashioned" white, pretzel, or "burger in a bowl" -- as nothing says "blue collar" like a desperate fear of carbs.

Hands down best burger in the greater Los Angeles area. We've had most of 'em. Our favorite is Beef (of course), on a pretzel bun, with provelone, chipotle mayo, avacado, and extra pickles. Get the sweet potato fries. We could eat this every day. Some may scoff, but getting it in a bowl is really good too.

It's hard to find, since its official address is on Santa Monica Boulevard, but its actual entrance, hidden behind a donut shop, is on South Bentley Avenue. I finally arrived and ordered a medium rare beef burger with a pretzel bun, onion mayonnaise, red leaf lettuce, sliced onion, tomato, and topped with provolone cheese, all for a very reasonable $7.95.

A few moments later, I was enjoying it on the outdoor patio, which is covered with old sails belonging to chef-owner Bill Dertouzos, accompanied by great fresh-cut French fries ($2.00). I'm happy to report he makes a VERY good hamburger, and have added the spot to our top 10 Burgers in Los Angeles list.

At Hole in the Wall, their attention to hand made ingredients are apparent. From the house made ketchup sitting at every table, to the house made pickles, hand cut fries, and variety of flavored mayos. Their fresh rolls are baked locally, their Angus beef, custom ground and never frozen.
